Nephroureterectomy

A variant of nephrectomy

Nephroureterectomy is a variant of a nephrectomy. This operation is performed when there is a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the kidney or ureter. This is a type of growth in the lining of the drainage system of the kidney, rather than in the parenchyma (meat) of the kidney.

A nephroureterectomy usually involves 2 incisions; a standard flank incision, as well as a smaller incision in the lower abdomen. (This is required as the kidney and the full length of the ureter down to the bladder are removed.)
